Schutzhund is a sport that is based on the original breed suitability test for the German Shepherd Dog, as devised by the original developer of the breed – Captain Max Von Stephanitz.

Today – there are two aspects to the sport of schutzhund – or IGP as it has been renamed. One is a fun way to spend time with your dog, train them to high levels of obedience, compete with them, enjoy the great outdoors and camaraderie with like-minded folks.

The other is that it is still a breed test – and measures the suitability of the German Shepherd Dog for entry into breeding programs and preserves the working characteristics of the breed for use in police, military, detection and service dog programs.
